SHORT HISTORY OF SBMF

By 1969, American regulatory agencies stated that controlled clinical trials were mandatory to drug registration. A group of Brazilian physicians that was working for pharmaceutical industries realized that they needed to learn the best way to run these trials. By 1971 they joined together and founded the Brazilian Society of Pharmaceutical Medicine - SBMF (Formerly called Associação Brasileira de Médicos Assessores da Industria Farmacêutica - ABMAIF, that means Brazilian Association of Advisory Physicians to Pharmaceutical Industry).

The main purpose of this group of physicians was to be a learning nucleus for pharmaceutical physicians and a special setting where they could exchange their knowledge and skills. The association has never had a vindication interest that was left to the medical trade-union.

Since its beginning, SBMF direction has been devoted to professional progress of its associates. It has made a national congress annually. In July, 1983, ABMAIF acquired his own office, located at the commercial and hotel centre of the city of São Paulo, where most of the associates work and live.

By 1985, taking in account the high number of knowledge and skills needed to work at pharmaceutical industry, SBMF started to set the certificate of Pharmaceutical Physician. A selected group of directors of SBMF and associates wrote an ambitious design that fit with the standards settled down by Brazilian Medical Association. On strict rules, the certificate was granted to a few physicians, but there was no continuous work to achieve the needed approval of both the Federal Council of Medicine and the Brazilian Medical Association.

By the beginning of 1988, federal laws dictated rules for registration and marketing and promotion of pharmaceutical products. Physicians devoted to pharmaceutical medicine became more skilled and highly regarded.

By 1988, in the USA, health agencies dictated the first guidelines for planning, carrying out and relating of clinical trials.

By 1993, World Health Organization determined the Good Clinical Practices for clinical trials and this obligation was accepted by Brazilian health agencies as it happened in most of western countries.

By 1996, in Brazil, new federal regulations imposed Good Clinical Practices to trials as a guide for all companies.

Owing to its constant and honest work, SBMF has been granted with the real consideration of Brazilian health authorities. As a consequence, directors of SBMF have been invited to participate in commissions in the Health Ministry. Traditionally, the President of National Health Surveillance Agency is present in our congresses. Since 1995, SBMF has worked hard for achieving more consistence to the Pharmaceutical Medicine as a specialty. The first Brazilian Course of Pharmaceutical Medicine was held in 2000. The student physicians received their certificates at the XXVI Congress of the SBMF, in São Paulo.
